Overnight trading refers to the buying and selling of financial instruments outside regular market hours. For example, regular trading hours for US stocks and ETFs are generally Monday to Friday from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm Eastern Time (ET). The overnight trading session for US stocks and ETFs are from 8:00 pm to 3:50 am ET, with the first session beginning on Sunday at 8:00 pm ET and the last session ending at 3:50 am on Friday. Trades executed between 8:00 pm and 12:00 am carry a trade date of the following day.
The benefits of overnight trading include:
Investors can trade outside of traditional market hours, offering access to those in different time zones or with a need to trade outside normal market hours.
Market-moving events and corporate news can happen at any time. Overnight trading allows investors to react promptly or capitalize on information in a timely manner.
Investors can implement trading strategies based on overnight market movements in advanced of the next regular trading session.
After-hours trading involves lower liquidity, wider spreads, and higher volatility, which can lead to poor pricing and incomplete executions. Prices may change sharply due to news announcements, and the lack of updated index values or indicative values can make it harder to assess fair prices.
Overnight trading allows IBKR clients to react immediately to market-moving events and optimize their trading strategies outside of traditional market hours. Traders’ Academy by Interactive Brokers provides complimentary resources to educate you on using overnight trading on our trading platforms, including lessons based on your preferred trading platform and dedicated lessons on trading CME or Cboe options.
This course explains how to create orders designed to execute beyond regular US trading hours. In addition, both CME and Cboe Global Markets offer around-the-clock access to futures options and options markets respectively. Each lesson walks the user though examples of accessing those markets.
